The 5K Breast Cancer CARE Walk is organized by a team of volunteers and held the second Saturday of May each year. This is a community walk supported by the City of Oakwood, Oakwood Schools, local businesses, and various service organizations. One-hundred percent of the monies raised at our 5K CARE Walks stays in the Dayton area to help the underserved and uninsured the Dayton Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF).
A big part of our CARE Walk the last few years has been our pink ribbon cookie sales. Laura's Cookies, sold exclusively at Dorothy Lane Market, bakes more than 3,000 cookies each spring for us to decorate and sell. Our volunteers frost the cookies, bag them, and sell them at various locations around Dayton. Our biggest sellers are the OJHS Lumberjack Leaders and the OHS Oakwood Giving service groups, who sell them during lunch and after school to students and staff. The girl scouts set up cookie stands outside of the elementary schools after school. Other volunteers sell them at their offices and club meetings. We start selling the cookies in April, and they are a nice reminder around town that CARE Walk is coming soon!
CARE Walk is held once each year, but year round CARE Walk is very active in the breast care health community in the Dayton area. We are a part of the Breast Cancer Task Force (BCTF), which is a coalition of all breast health providers/supporters in the Miami Valley. The purpose of the BCTF is to empower the community through education, support and advocacy regarding prevention, early detection, and treatment of breast cancer. CARE Walk is honored to be part of this very worthwhile organization.
The last few years, CARE Walk monies have supported the BCF/BCTF Breast Cancer Awareness Video Contest available to all high school students in the Miami Valley. Students create videos promoting some aspect of awareness and post them on YouTube and encourage all their friends and family to watch the videos and vote for their favorites. We have two categories for winners—one for most hits on YouTube and the other for best video message. This year we awarded more than $14,000 in scholarships to students in the Dayton area. Another bonus for all winners is that Rave Motion Pictures at the Greene hosted our Awards Ceremony, and the students and guests were able to see the winning videos on the BIG SCREEN.
